Former THS cheerleaders reunite in Big AppleThursday, October 30, 2008By RUTH ANN ESTES, Democrat News Staff
Life-long friends(left to right) Linda McCarty Cunningham of Memphis, Donna Holt Pitts of Phoenix, Az., Carolyn McCarty Keller of South Carolina and Laura Weems Walton of Trumann pictured recently in Rockefeller Center in New York. The four women who grew up in Trumann met in New York for a week long vacation. The four were cheerleaders together at Trumann High School 50 years ago and have kept in touch throughout the years.(Photo provided)Keeping up with your childhood friends after graduation is not easy. Four Trumann girls who were friends and cheerleaders together 50 years ago have kept up with each other through the years and recently met in New York City for a week long reunion.
The women, who grew up together and cheered on the Trumann Wildkittens and Trumann Wildcats cheerleading squads together, made plans in 2007 to take a trip together after Laura Weems of Trumann and Linda Cunningham of Memphis retired from their jobs. On Oct. 6, Weems and Cunningham flew from Memphis, Carolyn Keller from her home in South Carolina and Donna Pitts from her home in Phoenix, Az.
After settling into their hotel in Times Square, the ladies began their reunion. "It was exactly like 50 years had just melted away," Donna Holt Pitts said. "We stayed up until midnight every night laughing and talking and then were up by seven and ready to sightsee all over Manhattan."
The ladies saw three Broadway plays, took a bus tour of New York, viewed New York from the top of the Empire State Building, rode the subway, and visited Central Park. "We visited all the New York City sights everyone wants to see," Pitts said. "We also went to Ground Zero, the Statue of Liberty and Wall Street where we talked to a very nervous stockbroker."
Pitts said the group also walked part way over the Brooklyn Bridge and shopped along Park Avenue.
"Because our hotel was in Times Square, we really got to feel the energy that New York is all about."
And no trip to the Big Apple is complete without trying out good restaurants. "We ate some wonderful food and also talked to some of the nicest people," Pitts said.
"Whenever we would ask someone to take our picture, we would tell them we were cheerleaders 50 years ago in a small town in Arkansas," Pitts said. "The people thought that it was wonderful we were together and they were happy to oblige us."
The four friends spent a lot of time together, first as Wildkitten Cheerleaders for two years and then as Trumann Wildcat Cheerleaders. This is the 1957-58 squad. Pictured (left to right) back row, Elaine Conatser, Linda McCarty, Eleanor Ruth Cole, Carolyn McCarty, and Laura Weems; front, Donna Kay Holt and center Jan Meeks.(Photo provided) "We found the people to be very friendly," she said. "But maybe it was because we are very friendly gals from a wonderful small town in Arkansas."
The four "gals" keep in touch by e-mail.
"My husband, Rod, even e-mails Linda's husband, Gerald "Buckshot" Cunningham," Pitts said. "Over the years, Rod has become friends with all of my Trumann friends.
"I feel very fortunate to have grown up in Trumann. And I am thrilled that my husband loves it also."
Pitts left Trumann in her sophomore year in high school when her parents moved to Phoenix. She is the daughter of the late Burness and Mary Holt.
"My brother, Randy, and I were heartbroken!"
In 1972, Burness and Mary moved back to Trumann to live.
"Last summer, my husband and I visited Trumann for the first time since my dad died in 2004," Pitts said. "It was at this time that my three best friends and I planned this trip."
Two of the girls married Trumann High School graduates. Linda McCarty Cunningham married Gerald Cunningham and Carolyn McCarty Keller married Jim Keller. Linda's two sisters and mother all live in Trumann.
Only one of the four women, Laura Walton, still lives in Trumann.
Friendships sometimes fade, but you can bet that these women will continue to keep in touch and spend time remembering the fun of growing up in Trumann. More trips are sure to be scheduled in the future with the girls reminiscing about how fun it was to grow up in a small Arkansas town!

  1. Stopped by and visited with George F. and brought him new (to him)his leather boots. Cathy wants a harmonica but Gina is checking with her brother. He is afraid it might influence her asthma adversely. Worked on Oskar's pen. Fed the goats a couple gallons of rice. Formed out some more of the driveway for the Q.Hut. I am pleased with the rather rough surface of the concrete.... considering what it might have been if I hadn't worked on it! I went over to Charlie Spoon's. Gail and he are moving this December to Wyoming to be near their daughter. Waited over at George's and then went on over to the 5pm ballgame with Green County Tech. I know that Mark's 7th grade team has won 2 lost 1 and they tied tonight 16-16. Derrick/Marianne & Jo Ann were there also. I shared a seat with Robert S. of the Trumann Srs. group. To Bay and I took Jason L. a computer mouse(an old one). Wrestling tonight..... O.Hinds

This tank was one of many going north on the Frisco out of Bay, AR... Thursday morning

  1. Went lifting and swimming at the Wellness Center just next door to Holiday Inn where I am to meet my cousins.

  2. Eunice Jane W. and Lolita Wyatt R. were at the Holiday Inn. They are first cousins who had never met until this trip out to NE AR. Loliata flew in from Seattle, WA and met Jane in St. Louis and they traveled in Jane's car to Jonesboro. Jane had not met her dad, Cecil Wyatt until she was 12. Eunice's mother and Roy Wyatt(brother to Cecil) had been divorced long ago. My father Joe Hinds had sorta taken care of Roy Wyatt and seen that he had a place to stay since he wasn't really able due to a habit. I last recall seeing Roy in an apt at the rear of a church that my dad owned. Of course, my cousin, Louise Waters Wyatt married Homer (brother of the above-mentioned brothers) Wyatt and they lived in Elma, WA near my Aunt Tess(sister to my grandmother, Lona Belle(Lone)Crebb). Her two sisters, Vivian Waters Sergeant and Winniford(Winnie) Waters Walters lived there (but now reside in Seattle in the same residential apartments). We first visited sister, Vivian Hinds Presely at St. Elizabeth Place. Eunice had stayed with Vivian before. Then I drove (Eunice's car) to Turtlecreek Mall and visited with sister, Maxine. We three stopped at Bay Sr. Citizens for a great homecooked meal at Bay, AR. The girls parents were born near Bay, AR. Eunice's grandmother, Louise, was born on the banks of Gum Slough Ditch(she will be 103 this coming May 30). The girls visited a while while I showed a couple a '94 Topaz. Then we toured Trumann, the old school site(my brother Wayne owns that property now), Yellow Dog Hotel where Louise was born (Aunt Tess Crebb and Doc Waters were married there), and the Trumann Museum on Main St. Lolita had several pictures copied of old Trumann.

  3. Wed. ...

  4. Thursday... went lifting and swimming at Trim Gym and Beck took the car to see her sister Linda H. I met a lady whose mother lives in Elma, WA.... small world! I have made about 9 trips there to visit my Aunt Tess and cousins since 1974(I stayed with Aunt Tess that year). My last trip to Elma, WA was in 2006 when cousin Dude(Louise Waters) had her 100th birthday! Anyway this lady was Sissy W. and part of her husband's family was Dave Winters of Trumann, who (along with his wife, Myrtle, ran a store there.. which was just across from Campbell's Drug{where I formerly worked}). I went up to Valley View and watched my 7th grade grandson, Mark play football. They won 22-16! Mark got some tackles and on the last 1 second of the game, Mark was dragging the runner down and one of his own men hit him in the back sending him flying into the runner. Mark was very slow(some 20 seconds) getting up. Anyway Marianne, Stephen and Derrick went on back to T-town to be on hand when Mark's bus arrived. I stayed and watched the Jr's when over VV in overtime. I sat just in front of Paula Tucker/Donald Trentham , Mary Jane, Allison, Whit and Lane R. Had a great time.... Trumann won...a rare thing for the Junior team, I was told.

  5. Friday... Beckey was sick all day.... I went to Trumann and worked on the front of the Quonsett Hut, getting ready for any concrete which may come my way. I am a bit sore from this work along with yesterday's lifting of several sets of 120 pounds and swimming. Sharita B. did not show up to claim her red Topaz .. so I was somewhat disappointed.
  6. Cleaned up in the Grove, burned some limbs that the chain saw crew had left. Vance and Wayne dropped by. Shopped at Price Chopper. To Bay and talked with Jimmy S. and showed him my work. Came home and talked with Luis M. and Jr. L. Worked a bit on this blog... hope it stays up for a while... Thanks, Paul Nicholes, of Wynne for getting me started on this blog.... 1. Sunday... At Vivian's at 6:30, helped Mildred F., hugged Nellie V., sang with Ms. Wagster, Lorie, Evelyn and crew. Went in and spoke with Joyce W., Imogene W., Clarence H. wasn't in, but I think I saw him coming into the parking lot.
  2. On the Skilcare... talked with Gene, William G., Gertie S., Tim H., Mary A., Eula Mae and Waymon P., and a lot of my other friends, including Ken Beetles.
  3. Jimmy A. had the preaching. I helped with Lords'supper, George and Emma Jean sat behind Mc and me. Maxine and I ate at Dragon & Phoenix... I brought some home for Beck... Barry and Michelle followed me to the Grove. We looked at the goats and pig. Barry and I loaded the two French provincial chairs. .. two cans of paint for Jakeus arelius. Beck left and I went on over to Plantation Homes and spent a couple of hours before class with Steve/Jan... The truck was loaded with the 8 ft. bass boat that I had traded to James R.
  4. 10/13/8... Swimming at the Wellness Center. Met Bill Hassen.. He coached up in Michigan (coached Bill Laskey).. we exchanged phone #s. His wife is in St.Elizabeth as well as my sis, Viv.... Over to Holiday Inn and Eunice Jane and Lolita Rosen spent the day looking up cousins and going over where Roy, Homer, Cecil Wyatt (and their other siblings) lived as children. Of course Homer married our cousin Louise(Dude) Waters and Keith Waters is their only offspring and direct first cousins to our two visiting cousins. Lolita is Cecil's daughter. She didn't meet her dad for the first 12 years of her life. Lolita and Eunice Jane had never met until this trip (Jan flew from Salem, OR to St. Louis) to Trumann. I think that all our trip came together at the museum. Lolita got some copies of the "old" Trumann. I booked the museum for November the 29th for the Hinds reunion... I sold a Mercury '94 for a friend and bought 9 goats for a friend. The girls really enjoyed Phillip W's animal menagerie! Oh, we ate at the Bay Sr. Citizens building. They fit right in and Beckey and already brought over a cabbage/beef dish. We three cousins said goodbye at about 4 or so... Over to Plantation Homes and helped Bro. George to the supper table. .. hope and visited with James R/Cathy and Junior L...... O.Hinds

Beautiful weather in NE AR! The corn is being cut and the proverbial gleaning is in effect for the critters of O.Hinds! What a great meal George F., Rick, Fred, Jay & I had at PH! Visited, played, sang for my groups at St.Elizabeth's Place, Skillcare, Craighead Nursing and Jonesboro Homecare. I told Melvin/Opal B. that a friend, Clarence H. was at S.E.P. Class with Mike L. I generally chat with Mike C., Norman R., Marvin H., Roger, Carl, Buddy, Charley and several others. We were told that a jogger was hit by a car and it turned out to be Billie Stone Turman's daughter, Dee. It is so sad. I threw up my hand to two female joggers on my run out to Craighead N.Home just this morning. I am writing this on the 10-3 and Dee didn't make it.
We are beginning a 40 day of Community...(Purpose Driven series). We met at Jan/Steve R.'s home in T-town. I know the people in the group from our previous group. New comers are Jan's sister, Linda S. I had promised Phillip W. that I would come out to his place near the Bay Ditch. He and Belinda have the cutest female llama(just born).

10/1/8... Visited Irene, my cousin, on Whitlatch. She seems to be improving after that stroke.
Sad to hear that our friend's A.G's cancer has returned. Visited PH and George really liked the Watkin's Red Liniment... He said he really felt better after using it.
I fished a couple of hours at the old Vance N.'s place... caught about 25 bream... let them out at Cucklburr Slough. Picked up a little corn for Oscar...

10/2/8.. Thursday... Stopped by Charlie Spoon's home.. We are planning on making music next Thursday at PH.

Beckey talked with a former work friend from Haworth. Home. We still have the airconditioner in the computer room going. It was cool this morning.
